Getting the best from your avocados…

To get the best best avocado possible, we give it all the love possible for the 12 months from tiny flowers to mature fruit but once picked and delivered, there are a couple of simple tips help achieve best results.

You will only be the 2nd person to handle your avocado (a bit different from a supermarket one) This is important because touching and squeezing an avocado is never a good idea. The best indicator that it’s ready is the skin colour. It will go from bright green to dark green through to a purple/dark brown.

To confirm, you can give it a very gentle squeeze to confirm,  as the “button” stem at top will come out easy. And this is when it is ready to eat or pop into the fridge where it’ll fresh for another 6-10 days.  Unripe fruit will not ripen in the fridge

 Interesting Avo facts

Avocado trees flower approx September and October.  It flowers while still holding fruit to be picked - this is very unusual for a fruiting tree.

Avocado is viewed as a superfood as it’s a complete food.  Apparently we can live on it but clearly the people that said that hasn’t had Whittakers chocolate :-)

Avocado only ripen once picked, Hass Avocados are ready to be picked from September but will happily sit on the tree for 6 months without going rotten.  Only once picked will they complete the ripening process.

Only about 0.3% of flowering are pollinated and make it to mature fruit… that ones for tree botanists,  it’s super low.

Avocado may help lower your cholesterol as they are rich in good fats and that can reduce LDL (the bad type).  They are high in dietary fibre too - enjoy that guacamole!
